Signal concrete slabs are a specialized category of paving, the primary purpose of which is not aesthetics or load-bearing capacity, but communication. The relief surface of the signal slab, circular protrusions or linear grooves transmit information from the surface to the pedestrian through the touch and sound of footsteps. For people with visual impairments, this information is crucial for safe movement in public spaces.
Barrier-free solutions for public spaces are now not only an ethical requirement, but also a legal obligation for most publicly funded construction projects. Bus stops, pedestrian crossings, platforms, entrances to public buildings - everywhere, the correct installation of signage is mandatory.
Types of signal plates and their function
Concrete warning plates have circular protrusions on their surface, evenly spaced in a grid. These protrusions alert visually impaired pedestrians to dangerous places, the edge of the platform, the entrance to a pedestrian crossing, the beginning of stairs. The warning plate says: be careful, something ends or begins here.
The concrete guide plates have linear grooves on the surface, parallel ribs that guide the pedestrian in a specific direction. The guide plate says: go this way. The combination of guide lines and warning surfaces creates a complete orientation system for the visually impaired, which allows them to move independently and safely in public spaces.
